Malaysian PM urged to step down immediately

 Date: 13 Oct, 2008

Former Malaysian prime minister, Dr Mahatir Mohamad, has urged his successor to resign immediately. The current prime minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, announced last week he would be stepping down in March 2009. But Dr Mahatir told Radio Australia the prime minister should not wait till then to step down.

"As far as I'm concerned, he should resign now because we have a lot of work to do before we can revive the party and the next election is only fours years from now." Malaysia's deputy prime minister, Najib Razak, is slated to take over the reins next year and head the ruling party, UMNO.

Dr Mahatir, however, believes Mr Razak will need help to manage the country. "At this moment the administration of the country is in a very critical phase. "He needs a lot of advice and ff he has a number of poeple advising him, people who have some experience expertise, I'm quite sure he would be able to manage.

Despite losing an unprecedented number of seats to the opposition coalition, led by his own former deputy, Dr Mahatir says the ruling UMNO party is still stable.

"There is nothing really wrong with the party," he said.

"The system is very good and has delivered for the past 50 years. "But when you have a leadership that's not competent enough to run the party well, then the reaction is against the leader, not against the party."

Dr Mahatir says there is much to be done to revive UMNO's popularity in Malaysia.
